Support Available for Grandparents

Grandparents face many challenges when confronted with the unexpected responsibility of caring for young children or teenagers. You may have to change your retirement plans, find it difficult to set boundaries and routines, worry about money and resources and experience increased stress. A monthly support group for grandparents raising grandchildren runs on the third Tuesday of each month at Vinnies Services in Deniliquin.  This group also offers support for grandparents seeking access to grandchildren as a result of:

- Family Law Court decisions

- Illness/disability

- Separation/divorce

- Drug or alcohol addiction

- Death/suicide

- Mental health issues

The Grandparents Doing It Tough group offers understanding, friendship, shared experiences and knowledge, parenting strategies, support and advocacy, education and social activities. Guest speakers also attend the sessions.

Grandparents Doing It Tough is supported by Centacare SW NSW and St Vincent de Paul Society NSW.

Tennant Park Fitness Hub

It was fantastic to see so many tenants and their family members attend the opening of the Tennant Park Fitness Hub in Deniliquin in June. Our guests enjoyed some afternoon tea and giveaways and had a chance to try out the new equipment. The fitness hub comprises three pieces of outdoor exercise equipment and is located in Tennant Park (between Davies Court and Laman Court) in Deniliquin. Funding for this equipment was provided by Family and Community Services and the project has been supported by Edward River Council.  This is one of the most exciting tenant engagement projects Homes Out West has been involved in to date, and we look forward to more projects like this in the future.  If you haven¹t seen it yet, make sure you head down to check it out!

Homes Out West welcomes a new CEO

It is with great pleasure that the Homes Out West Board of Directors announces the appointment of Cliff Jones to the position of Chief Executive Officer.  The appointment follows an extensive recruitment process.

Cliff has been with Homes Out West since early 2016 in the roles of Manager Housing and Community, and more recently Interim CEO.  Cliff brings significant experience in managing and leading organisations and teams in all facets of operations; with over 25 years' experience in the disability sector and not-for-profit organisations in regional NSW and Victoria.

He will be based between the Albury and Deniliquin offices.

“I am excited by the prospect of working with the Board as well as a committed and highly skilled group of staff to ensure we continue to provide quality housing and the best possible service to our communities,” Cliff said.

“I am keen to explore innovative ways to facilitate meaningful engagement with tenants and other support providers.”

The Board looks forward to working with Cliff and the Homes Out West team to continue to build on the strengths of the organisation and achieve excellence in all areas of our service delivery to tenants.

Albury tenant forum

In September, we held our first Tenant Forum and Luncheon for the year in Albury.

The luncheon was held at Mirambeena Community Centre in Lavington, with around 20 tenants attending.

Tenants had an opportunity to talk with staff about what Homes Out West is doing well and what we could be doing better. Thanks to all who attended! Your feedback was very appreciated and will help our team.

We look forward to hosting forums in other communities in the coming weeks. If you have any ideas for the Tenant Forum, let us know - we’d love to hear from you.
